Authorization, Accreditation & Inspections

Part of our continuing commitment to providing the highest quality international education in Iceland includes regular inspections and audits (Read more about our 10-year history). At ISI, the quality of our students' education always comes first.

ISI receives accreditation with the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) in 2017

What is the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA)?

The Middle States Association (MSA) Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools are affiliated with the United States State Department’s Office of Overseas Schools and provide accreditation services to American and international-style schools attended by members of the U.S. foreign service and U. S. citizens working for non-government agencies and multi-national corporations. The Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools accredit early childhood through post-secondary, public, private, and faith-based educational institutions.

What does it mean to be an Accredited School?

Accreditation is...

  • An indication that the school offers an education of quality
  • The opportunity to receive an objective evaluation conducted by fellow professionals
  • A plan for the future
  • Closer links with other international schools.

Colleges and universities worldwide acknowledge that an Accredited School meets internationally agreed upon and recognized standards.

Local Authorization

The Icelandic Ministry of Education, Science and Culture and the municipality of Garðabær have both licensed ISI to operate.

ISI underwent a meticulous evaluation over the course of several months to ensure that we were fulfilling all laws and requirements set forth by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.

Does ISI belong to other international organizations?

Yes. ISI became a full member of the global organization European Council of International Schools (ECIS) in 2010 after an on-site membership visit by ECIS Board of Trustees member Coreen Hester. ISI has applied to be part of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in order to offer the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) to students in grades 7-10. We currently have candidate school status.
