ISI PTA Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Day
October 10, 2016
The Parent Teacher Association of ISI recognized the ISI teachers and staff on Monday, October 10, in celebration of Teacher Appreciation Day. Parents prepared a gourmet meal of various international treats and delivered it to the school for a nice luncheon for ISI staff.
The PTA, on behalf of all the parents, also gave a gift of appreciation to the teachers; an ISI Logo Coffee mug filled with nice homemade treats. The night before some volunteer parents gathered together to wrap the gifts and prepare for the celebration. According to the PTA, the luncheon was a nice way to show the appreciation the parents and children of ISI have for all the hard work the ISI teachers and staff do on a daily basis to support a warm, caring atmosphere fostering a great learning environment for their children. Teachers make a big difference in our child's lives and the parents greatly appreciate the great teachers at ISI who make a difference every day.
Children also showed their appreciation throughout the school day through words and cards of thanks to their teachers. It was a nice opportunity to recognize the ISI teachers for all they do. It was another lovely experience throughout the afternoon, all due to the hard work of our PTA.

Get Ready for the Holidays at ISI
December 1, 2016
On Thursday, December 1, 2016, the ISI PTA sponsored it's Annual Holiday Family Fun Night. Parents made holiday crafts with their children that were provided free of charge to families. The event also was part of fundraising for the PTA. Families enjoyed some international treats at the ISI PTA Cafe. Hot soups, Yakitori sticks -- chicken with sweet soy sauce, Belgium Waffles, Samosas, Icelandic cakes, New York Cheesecake were among some of the international delicacies donated to by parents and sold at the PTA cafe.
Kids sang with Gryla, the mother of the 13 Yule Lads and learned a little about the Icelandic Yule Lad tradition. A surprise early visit from a Yule Lad, Þvörusleikir, the Spoon Licker, who likes to take a Þvörur (a type of a wooden spoon with a long handle - I. þvara) to lick, was one of the highlights of the event. He arrived early to give all the Children a treat bag with a mandarin, a candy cane, and some chocolates. This Icelandic tradition where children leave their shoe in the window in hopes of getting a small gift or treat from each of the 13 Yule Lads begins on December 12 with the arrival of the first Yule Lad, Stekkjarstaur, the Sheep-Cote Clod.
Families also had the opportunity to buy books in English at bargain prices. A raffle for more than 40 prizes was held thanks to the generosity of various sponsors. Children also had fun participating in a Cake Walk. Children enjoyed choosing cakes donated by ISI parents from the Cake Table. The first Cake winner chose a wonderful Smarties Pouring Down Cake created by parent Gem King. Finally, the Middle School Children raised money for their upcoming school trip to Madrid, Spain by selling crafts during the event.
Thanks to all the support from families and parent volunteers the night was a big success and a nice way to kick off the December holiday season.

ISI Students Write for Rights with Amnesty International
December 16, 2016
Middle School students recently invited Vala Ósk Bergsveinsdóttir, Human Rights Education Coordinator for Amnesty International in Iceland, to collect letters written as part of the annual Write for Rights campaign. Our students produced an amazing total of 97 handwritten letters, as well as signed postcards and online petitions. Congratulations to our students!
Amnesty International runs this global letter-writing marathon each year in an effort to help people suffering human rights abuses. Every year, to mark Human Rights Day on December 10th, hundreds of thousands of people around the world write letters and sign online petitions to help human rights activists around the world. This year's featured individuals included Taiwanese artist and activist Ai Weiwei and Edward Snowden.

ISI Invites Dads for Dads & Doughnuts
March 16, 2016
On Thursday, March 16, 2016, the ISI students and staff welcomed their favorite dad, uncle, grandad or brother to school for our annual Dads & Doughnuts celebration.
This fun-filled event kicked off the day, with two classes first performing at Morning Singing. Our visitors then tried their hand at various activities before digging into donuts. Judging from the smiling, faces, the event was a huge success!
Hraunfoss class and their dads took part in a team building activity which involved working in small groups to transport a marble from one side of the room to the other. Each member of the team had a tube to help them transport the marble. The students and their dads did a great job working together, and teacher Lucy was so impressed with how quickly they were able to complete this task.
Meanwhile, Middle School students created a Kahoot!-style game to play with their Dads. The game covered various aspects of their recent learning, plus a few doughnut-friendly questions. Muhammad and Devon were the winners!
Thanks to all our ISI family members who were able to join us for this fun-filled day. Students and staff were thrilled to share these activities with you and create memories for years to come!

Our Annual Easter Egg Hunt
March 24, 2016
On the afternoon of Friday, March 24, 2016, the whole of ISI headed outside for our annual Easter egg hunt. Each student had to find 5 plastic eggs hidden among the nooks and crannies of the playground.
When we returned inside, the students collected some small prizes and enjoyed eating some delicious food from our buffet table, all provided by the moms and dads of our Parent-Teacher Association. As always, this was a really fun afternoon and the students in the Middle School did an amazing job organizing this event and helping the younger students on the hunt!
